Instagram vs LinkedIn carousels - what actually changes when you cross-post

Instagram vs LinkedIn carousels - what actually changes when you cross-post

Instagram and LinkedIn both reward carousels, which makes cross-posting tempting: write once, post twice. That instinct is right, but posting the exact same file to both is a mistake. The idea travels. The format, the voice, and the dimensions do not.

Here is what actually changes when you move a carousel from one network to the other, so the same idea lands in both feeds instead of feeling out of place in one.

The format is technically different

On Instagram, a carousel is a native multi-image post: you upload a set of slides and people swipe through them in the feed. On LinkedIn, the equivalent is the document post, a PDF that renders as a swipeable viewer. Same experience for the reader, different upload.

Practically, this means your LinkedIn carousel is exported as a multi-page PDF, while your Instagram carousel is a set of individual images. If you are making both, you want a tool or workflow that can export to each format from the same design, or you end up rebuilding the whole thing twice. We cover the LinkedIn side in detail in how to make a LinkedIn carousel that earns reach.

The dimensions are not the same

Instagram carousels look best in a portrait ratio that fills the feed. LinkedIn document posts are usually built square, and a square carousel reads cleanly in the LinkedIn viewer on both desktop and mobile.

If you take an Instagram portrait carousel and drop it straight into a LinkedIn document, you often get awkward cropping or wasted space. Design for the ratio each network wants. For the exact Instagram numbers, see Instagram carousel sizes in 2026; for LinkedIn, square is the safe default.

The voice shifts

This is the part most people skip, and it is the one that matters most. The idea stays the same, but the tone changes with the room.

Instagram rewards a punchy, benefit-first, slightly informal voice. Short lines, a strong hook, a clear promise. LinkedIn rewards the same clarity but a more grounded, professional framing. The hook that reads as bold and fun on Instagram can read as flippant on LinkedIn, and the measured take that works on LinkedIn can feel slow on Instagram.

You are not rewriting the carousel. You are adjusting the language so it fits the audience. Same five points, different register.

The hook stays king on both

One thing does not change: slide 1 decides everything. On both networks, if the first slide does not stop the scroll, no one sees the rest. The hook formulas that work on Instagram work on LinkedIn too, adjusted for tone. If you want a starting point, we list nine of them in Instagram carousel hooks.

The difference is what stops the scroll for each audience. Instagram users respond to bold outcome-driven hooks. LinkedIn users respond to hooks tied to their work, their results, or an assumption worth challenging in their field.

Caption and context differ too

Instagram captions can be longer and lean on the carousel to carry the point, with the caption adding personality and a call to action. LinkedIn rewards a strong opening line in the post text itself, because LinkedIn truncates after a couple of lines and that preview decides whether people expand.

So on LinkedIn, put real thought into the first line of the post copy, not just the first slide. On Instagram, the first slide does most of that work.

The takeaway

Cross-posting carousels is worth it, but "same idea" is not "same file." Keep the idea and the structure, then change three things: export to the right format (images for Instagram, PDF document for LinkedIn), design for the right ratio (portrait for Instagram, square for LinkedIn), and shift the voice to fit the room. Do that and one idea earns reach in both feeds.
